Diwali Lakshmi Puja: Method, Materials and the Right Muhurat

Diwali is the largest festival in the Hindu calendar, and the Lakshmi Puja performed on the new moon of Kartika is its centrepiece. Performed properly, it is said to bring prosperity and peace through the year.
Preparation begins well before the day. The house is cleaned thoroughly, which is not merely custom: the tradition holds that Lakshmi does not enter an unclean space. The place of worship is purified with Ganga water, a red or yellow cloth is spread, and the images are installed, with Ganesha to the right of Lakshmi.
The materials required are roli, mauli, rice, flowers, incense, lamps, camphor, coconut, betel leaf and nut, cloves, cardamom, sweets, fruit, a kalash, new images of Lakshmi and Ganesha, and a lotus flower where one can be obtained.
The sequence runs as follows. The kalash is installed first. Ganesha is invoked and worshipped, as he is in every rite. Lakshmi is then worshipped with the sixteen steps of the shodashopachara. The Lakshmi Sukta or Shri Sukta is recited. The mantra Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Kamale Kamalalaye Praseed Praseed Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah is recited one hundred and eight times. The arti is performed and prasad distributed.
On timing, both Pradosh Kaal, the period following sunset, and Nishith Kaal, around midnight, are considered auspicious. The preferred choice is Pradosh Kaal falling in a fixed sign, meaning Taurus, Leo, Scorpio or Aquarius, since a fixed sign is held to make the blessing settle rather than pass through.
One point matters for families abroad: sunset, and therefore Pradosh Kaal, is local. The muhurat published for India does not apply elsewhere and must be recalculated.
Finally, the tradition is unambiguous that devotion outweighs display. Elaborate expenditure is not required. A clean home, lamps, sincerity and the right moment are enough.
