In traditional Hindu marriage, Ashtakoot matching, commonly called the 36 Guna match, is the standard method for assessing compatibility between a prospective bride and groom. Ashta means eight and koota means category. These eight categories are evaluated using the Moon sign and birth nakshatra of both people.
Each category carries a specific number of points, totalling 36:
1. Varna, worth 1 point, covers spiritual compatibility 2. Vashya, worth 2 points, covers mutual attraction 3. Tara, worth 3 points, covers health and wellbeing 4. Yoni, worth 4 points, covers physical compatibility 5. Graha Maitri, worth 5 points, covers mental and intellectual friendship 6. Gana, worth 6 points, covers temperament 7. Bhakoot, worth 7 points, covers emotional harmony 8. Nadi, worth 8 points, covers genetic compatibility and the health of children
A minimum of 18 gunas is generally required for a match to be considered favourable. A score between 18 and 25 is regarded as average, 26 to 32 as excellent, and anything above 32 as rare and highly auspicious.
A high guna score does not by itself guarantee a successful marriage. Guna matching is only the first step. A complete assessment also examines the positions of Mars for Manglik Dosha, Jupiter for blessings and Venus for affection, along with the strength of the seventh house in both charts.
