Why an Accurate Birth Time Matters So Much in Vedic Astrology

The ascendant changes roughly every two hours and the Navamsa every thirteen to fifteen minutes. An error of ten to fifteen minutes in the recorded birth time can therefore shift all twelve houses of the chart and make the resulting predictions meaningless.
In Vedic astrology the accuracy of your birth time is the foundation on which every prediction rests. Western astrology focuses mainly on the Sun sign, which changes once a month. Vedic astrology gives primacy to the Lagna, the rising sign, and to the Moon sign.
The Lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. Because the earth rotates continuously, the Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and the precise degree of the Lagna shifts every four minutes.
If your recorded birth time is wrong by even ten or fifteen minutes, you may fall into an entirely different Lagna. Since the Lagna represents the first house, which is the self, a change there moves all eleven remaining houses. Predictions about career from the tenth house, marriage from the seventh and wealth from the second can all be completely wrong.
Beyond this, the Navamsa chart, used for detailed analysis of marriage and inner strength, changes every thirteen to fifteen minutes. The dasha system, which determines the timing of events, is equally sensitive.
