Rahu and Ketu: How the Shadow Planets Actually Work

Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies but the two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the path of the Sun. Rahu drives worldly desire and expansion, Ketu detachment and depth. They always sit exactly opposite each other and always move in reverse.
Among the nine grahas, Rahu and Ketu occupy a special position. They are not physical bodies at all. They are the two mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun. For this reason they are called chhaya grahas, shadow planets.
Rahu is the north node and Ketu the south. They always sit exactly one hundred and eighty degrees apart, and they always move in retrograde motion.
The Puranic account explains their nature well. During the churning of the ocean, an asura named Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality by deception. Vishnu severed his head from his body, but because he had already tasted the nectar both halves survived. The head became Rahu and the body became Ketu.
The symbolism is precise. Rahu has a head but no body, so his appetite is limitless and never satisfied. Ketu has a body but no head, so he acts without calculation and is indifferent to worldly gain.
In practice Rahu signifies ambition, foreign lands, technology, unconventional paths and sudden rises. He amplifies whatever house he occupies, often bringing intense desire for the matters of that house.
Ketu signifies detachment, research, spirituality and hidden knowledge. He tends to reduce ordinary satisfaction in the affairs of his house while granting unusual depth in the same area.
Both take about eighteen months to cross a sign and eighteen years to complete a circuit. Their remedies are well established, but neither should be approached with fear. Understanding what they are asking for is more useful than trying to suppress them.
