Satyanarayan Vrat Katha: Significance, Method and Timing

In short
The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is worship of Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan, described in the Skanda Purana. It is performed on Purnima, on Sankranti and after any auspicious occasion. Five chapters of the story are heard, and prasad is distributed.
The Satyanarayan Vrat Katha is among the most frequently performed rituals in Indian homes. Its great advantage is simplicity: it requires no rare materials, no elaborate arrangement, and no strictly fixed muhurat.
The account appears in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana, where Vishnu himself describes the vrat to Narada.
The meaning of the name
Satyanarayan is made of two words. Satya means the ultimate truth and Narayan is Vishnu. Satyanarayan is therefore the divine present as truth.
The central message of the rite is that keeping to the truth is itself the highest form of worship. In every chapter of the story, someone who takes a vow and then forgets it meets with difficulty.
When it is performed
Purnima is considered the best day, particularly the full moons of Kartika, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha. Sankranti, Ekadashi and Thursdays are also suitable.
In practice it is performed after moving into a new house, after a wedding, on starting a business, on the birth of a child, on buying a vehicle, and whenever a wish has been fulfilled.
Materials
Banana leaves and stems, a kalash, mango leaves, a coconut, roli, mauli, rice, turmeric, sandalwood, panchamrit, tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, a lamp, camphor, betel leaf and nut, cloves, cardamom, seasonal fruit, sweets, and an image of Satyanarayan or a shaligram.
For the prasad: semolina, sugar, ghee, milk and banana. Tradition uses proportions of one and a quarter.
The sequence
Bathe, put on clean clothes and purify the place of worship.
Build a canopy with banana stems and set the image on a low table covered with red or yellow cloth.
Install the kalash, filled with water and holding a betel nut, a coin and mango leaves, with a coconut placed on top.
Take the sankalpa, stating your name, gotra, place and the purpose of the puja.
Worship Ganesha, then the nine planets, then perform the sixteen step worship of Satyanarayan.
Hear the five chapters of the story.
Close with the arti, distribution of prasad and feeding of brahmins.
The five chapters
In the first, Narada asks and Vishnu describes the merit of the vrat, with the story of a poor brahmin.
In the second, a woodcutter and King Ulkamukh receive prosperity through the vrat.
In the third, the merchant Sadhu takes a vow and forgets it, and suffers for the omission.
In the fourth, the merchant and his son in law make a sea voyage, and the consequence of slighting the prasad is shown.
In the fifth, King Tungadhwaja refuses to join the worship and suffers loss.
Rules of observance
The person taking the vow should fast and keep to simple food.
The five chapters should be heard together, without rising in between.
The prasad should never be treated lightly. That is the story's central point.
Whatever is vowed should be carried out. That is the meaning of Satya Narayan.
For families abroad
Many families perform this puja outside India. Local substitutes are accepted where materials are unavailable, such as a symbolic stand in for banana leaves.
What matters is the clarity of the sankalpa and hearing the whole story. A katha conducted by a pandit over video is equally valid, provided the household takes part with proper attention and observance.
