Moon Sign or Sun Sign: Which One Should You Actually Read?

In short

The Sun sign comes from the Sun position at birth and describes the soul, ego and life purpose. The Moon sign comes from the Moon position and describes the mind and emotions. Vedic astrology calculates dashas, transits and horoscopes from the Moon sign.

More confusion arises from this one question than from almost anything else in astrology. One person says they are Aries, another insists their sign is Scorpio, and when the birth dates are checked the calculation gives something different again. The reason is that two different systems are in circulation.

What the Sun sign is

The Sun sign is the sign the Sun occupied at your birth. The Sun stays in a sign for about thirty days, so nearly everyone born in the same month shares a Sun sign.

Western astrology is built almost entirely on it. The daily horoscopes printed in newspapers and published on most websites use it. This is exactly why they read so generally: at any moment such a column is addressing roughly eight per cent of the world's population.

The Sun signifies the soul. It describes your essential nature, self respect, sense of purpose, your father and your relationship with authority.

What the Moon sign is

The Moon sign is the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. The Moon stays in a sign for only about two and a quarter days, which means two people born on the same day can have different Moon signs.

In Vedic astrology this is called the janma rashi, the birth sign. The syllable used for naming a child is drawn from the Moon's nakshatra.

The Moon signifies the mind. It describes your emotions, mental disposition, memory, your mother and how you actually react from day to day.

Why Vedic astrology gives the Moon primacy

There are three concrete reasons.

The first is that the Vimshottari dasha system is based entirely on the birth nakshatra, and the birth nakshatra is fixed by the Moon. The dasha is the system that times events. If the Moon's position is wrong, the whole sequence is wrong.

The second is that transit results are read from the Moon sign. Sade Sati in particular is calculated from the Moon, not the Sun. A great many people worry unnecessarily because they have read it from the wrong reference.

The third is that guna matching for marriage rests on the Moon sign and birth nakshatra.

The ayanamsa difference

There is a further reason the two systems disagree. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the equinoxes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the stars. The gap between them, the ayanamsa, is currently around twenty four degrees.

This is why someone who is Aries by Western calculation usually comes out as Pisces by Vedic calculation. Neither is an error. They are measuring from different starting points.

What to do with this

If you are taking guidance from Vedic astrology, find your Moon sign and read from that. To calculate it you need your date of birth, time of birth and place of birth.

The most complete approach is to read all three together. The Sun sign says what you are fundamentally reaching for. The Moon sign says how you actually experience your days. The lagna says how the world encounters you. Any conclusion drawn from one alone is partial.
