The Tenth House and Career: Choosing a Direction from the Chart

In short

The tenth house represents work, livelihood, reputation and public standing. Career direction is read from four things together: the sign on the tenth house, the planets in it, the placement of the tenth lord, and the lord of the nakshatra the tenth lord occupies.

Career questions are now among the most common that reach an astrologer, particularly from younger people trying to decide which direction to take.

Vedic astrology does not answer this from a single house. It reads several indications together.

Why the tenth house

The tenth house is the highest point of the chart, the part of the sky directly overhead at the moment of birth. It is called the karma bhava, the house of action.

It governs livelihood, field of work, social standing, authority and the identity by which others know you.

The order of reading

The first step is the sign on the tenth house. Movable signs, being Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn, suit work involving change and mobility. Fixed signs, being Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, suit staying in one field for a long time. Dual signs, being Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, suit holding several roles at once.

The second step is any planet placed in the tenth house, whose nature bears directly on the kind of work.

The third step is where the tenth lord sits, which indicates the source from which livelihood comes. A tenth lord in the ninth suggests work connected with fortune, travel or foreign links. In the fifth, it suggests education, creativity or advisory work.

The fourth and most refined step is the lord of the nakshatra occupied by the tenth lord. Experienced astrologers draw their most precise conclusions here.

Fields by planet

The Sun points to administration, government service, politics, medicine and positions of authority.

The Moon points to public dealing, hospitality, liquids, nursing, psychology and anything involving the general public.

Mars points to engineering, the armed forces, police, surgery, land, construction and sport.

Mercury points to communication, writing, accountancy, mathematics, trade, software and brokerage.

Jupiter points to education, law, advisory work, religion, finance and consultancy.

Venus points to art, music, beauty, fashion, entertainment, luxury goods and design.

Saturn points to labour, mining, iron, construction, research, law enforcement and work requiring long endurance.

Rahu points to technology, foreign connections, research, aviation, import and export, and unconventional fields.

Ketu points to spirituality, research, medicine, astrology and subtle subjects.

Employment or enterprise

This question is settled by comparing the sixth and seventh houses.

The sixth is the house of service. If its lord is strong and connects to the tenth house, employment suits.

The seventh is the house of partnership and trade. If its lord is strong, the ascendant lord independent, and Jupiter or Venus influences the tenth, running one's own concern is more suitable.

Timing

Significant career change generally arrives at the start of the mahadasha or antardasha of the tenth lord or a planet linked to the tenth house.

Saturn transiting the tenth house tends to bring serious restructuring. Jupiter transiting the tenth or eleventh is usually a period of advancement.

A practical note

Astrology does not choose a career for you. It indicates natural disposition and favourable direction.

If your chart points towards teaching and advisory work while you are employed as an engineer, it does not follow that you will fail. It suggests only that the same effort in the other direction might have brought more satisfaction and faster progress.

Any decision should combine the astrological indication, your actual aptitude and your own interest.

Frequently asked questions

Is career read only from the tenth house?+

No. The second house for income, the sixth for service and employment, and the eleventh for gains are all examined. The ascendant lord indicates the underlying disposition.

How do I choose between a job and a business?+

A strong sixth house and its lord favour employment. A strong seventh and tenth, with an independent ascendant lord, favour running something of your own.

When do career changes happen?+

Major shifts usually come at the start of the mahadasha or antardasha of the tenth lord or a planet connected to the tenth house. Saturn and Jupiter transits are also decisive.
