Foreign Travel and Settling Abroad: What the Chart Shows

The number of Indian families living outside the country keeps growing, and with it the question of whether a chart shows the possibility of going abroad. It comes from students, from working professionals and from families arranging marriages.

Vedic astrology reads this from a combination of houses rather than any single one.

The twelfth house

The twelfth is usually described as the house of expenditure, but it has a larger meaning: distant places. It represents locations far from the place of birth, seclusion, ashrams and foreign lands.

When the twelfth lord is strong and connects with the ascendant lord, the tenth lord or the fourth lord, the possibility of living abroad becomes significant.

The ninth house

The ninth governs long journeys, higher education and dharma. Those who go abroad to study very often have an active ninth house.

Where the ninth and twelfth lords relate to each other, foreign residence connected with study or religious work becomes likely.

The fourth house

The fourth is the house of homeland, home and roots. For permanent settlement abroad, a weak or afflicted fourth house is a common signature.

If the fourth lord moves into the twelfth house, or Rahu influences the fourth, a person tends to settle away from their birthplace.

Rahu

Rahu is the strongest single indicator here. It signifies the unfamiliar, the foreign, the unconventional and whatever lies beyond a boundary.

Rahu in the first, fourth, ninth, tenth or twelfth house is a strong marker of foreign connection, and many people relocate during a Rahu mahadasha.

Other planets

Saturn brings distance, separation and permanence, so a link between Saturn and the twelfth house suggests a long stay.

The Moon and Venus are associated with water, and so with crossing the sea.

Jupiter connected to the twelfth or ninth indicates going abroad for education or advisory work.

Visiting versus staying

This distinction is important and often overlooked.

For travel alone, an active ninth and third house is sufficient. For permanent settlement, both a weakened fourth house and a strong twelfth house are needed.

Where the fourth house is very strong, a person may go abroad and eventually return.

Timing

Departure usually occurs during the mahadasha or antardasha of the twelfth lord, the ninth lord or Rahu, with a Saturn or Jupiter transit activating the opportunity.

If someone is trying to move and nothing is working, the reason is often simply that the supporting period has not yet begun.

A technical point for families abroad

For families already outside India, one detail matters more than any other. A chart is always cast for the latitude, longitude and timezone of the actual birth place.

A child born abroad cannot have a chart built on Indian Standard Time. This is a frequent error in free applications, which often assume Indian time by default, and it produces the wrong ascendant.

The same applies to choosing an auspicious time. The sunrise and local time of your current residence are what matter, not those of India. Without that adjustment the timing will not be correct.
