Gajakesari Yoga: The Combination of Jupiter and the Moon

In short
Gajakesari Yoga forms when Jupiter sits in a kendra from the Moon, meaning the first, fourth, seventh or tenth house counted from the Moon. It indicates intellect, discernment, reputation and social respect, and delivers fully only when both planets are strong and unafflicted.
Gajakesari Yoga is among the best known combinations in Vedic astrology, and the name itself explains it. Gaja means elephant and kesari means lion. The yoga is said to carry the steadiness of the elephant and the brilliance of the lion.
How it forms
Gajakesari Yoga forms when Jupiter occupies a kendra from the Moon, meaning the first, fourth, seventh or tenth position counted from wherever the Moon sits.
Note carefully that this is counted from the Moon, not from the ascendant. If the Moon is in the third house, then Jupiter in the third, sixth, ninth or twelfth house forms the yoga.
The strongest expression is when Jupiter and the Moon occupy the same house.
What it gives
Jupiter signifies knowledge, discernment, dharma and the role of the teacher. The Moon signifies mind, feeling and popularity.
When these combine, a person tends to have both understanding and the ability to connect with people. Such people often become good speakers, teachers, advisers or guides.
The results usually described are quick intelligence and an appetite for learning, respect and good standing in society, mental steadiness in difficult times, and support from seniors and teachers.
An honest qualification
Here is the part that is rarely stated. Gajakesari Yoga is not nearly as rare as its reputation suggests.
Jupiter stays in a sign for about a year and the Moon for a little over two days. Mathematically, the yoga forms in something like a third of all charts. If it were as extraordinary as claimed, a third of the world would be extraordinary.
So the presence of the yoga is not itself cause for excitement. What matters is how pure and how strong it is.
Judging its strength
Several conditions are checked. Jupiter should be in its exaltation sign Cancer, its own signs Sagittarius or Pisces, or a friendly sign. In its debilitation sign Capricorn the yoga weakens considerably.
The Moon should be strong. A waxing Moon is strong; a Moon close to the new moon is weak.
Both should ideally occupy kendra or trikona houses. Placement in the sixth, eighth or twelfth reduces the result.
Neither should be afflicted by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
When it shows
Like other yogas, Gajakesari expresses most clearly during the mahadasha and antardasha of Jupiter or the Moon. Jupiter's mahadasha runs sixteen years and the Moon's ten.
In those periods, noticeable improvement is often seen in education, reputation and social standing.
In summary
Gajakesari Yoga is a favourable indication and not a guarantee of anything. It grants a helpful intellectual and emotional disposition. What a person does with it remains their own affair.
If your chart carries it, the practical implication is that time invested in study and in the field of knowledge will return more than average. That is the most useful way to read it.
