Manglik Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha, is among the most misunderstood ideas in Vedic astrology. It forms when Mars occupies the first, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house of the birth chart.
Many people fear this placement, believing it brings discord in marriage or danger to the spouse. The classical texts take a far more measured view. Mars signifies energy, courage and drive. When that energy falls on the houses connected with married life, it can occasionally create friction.
The plain fact is that close to fifty per cent of charts carry Manglik Dosha in one form or another. It is not a curse. Astrology also recognises a long list of exceptions, known as dosha bhanga, that cancel it entirely. If Mars sits in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or in its exaltation sign Capricorn, the difficult effects reduce sharply.
When two Manglik people marry, the doshas cancel one another. Where a Manglik and a non-Manglik are matched, remedies such as Kumbh Vivah, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and a suitably chosen gemstone may be prescribed.
