The previous article looked at what Mangal Dosha is. This one deals with the practical question families actually face: how it is handled when two charts are being matched.
The first principle is that the dosha is never assessed in isolation. Both charts are examined together. If both the prospective bride and groom carry Mangal Dosha, the tradition holds that the doshas cancel one another, and the match is treated as acceptable on that count.
The second principle is that a long list of exceptions cancels the dosha even in a single chart. If Mars occupies its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or its exaltation sign Capricorn, the effect is substantially reduced. If Mars is aspected by or conjoined with Jupiter, it is considered restrained. If Mars sits in its own house counted from the ascendant, several authorities treat the dosha as cancelled. Placement in certain signs, particularly Leo and Aquarius, is also cited.
The third principle concerns method. Mars is checked not only from the ascendant but also from the Moon and from Venus. A person may show the dosha from one reference point and not from the others, and the overall severity is judged accordingly. This is why two astrologers can give different answers about the same chart: they may not be using the same reference.
Where the dosha is genuinely present and unmatched, Kumbh Vivah is the classical remedy. The Manglik person is symbolically married first to a pot, a peepal or banana tree, or an image of Vishnu, so that the first expression of the dosha falls there.
Beyond that, worship of Hanuman, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, fasting on Tuesdays and the donation of red items are prescribed.
The most useful advice remains the simplest. Have the dosha verified before acting on it. A great many matches are abandoned over a condition that, on examination, was already cancelled.
