Ketu: Detachment, Liberation and Deep Knowledge

Among the nine grahas, Rahu and Ketu occupy an unusual position. They are not physical bodies but mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the path of the Sun. This is why they are called chhaya grahas, shadow planets.

Ketu is the south node and Rahu the north. They always sit exactly opposite one another and always move in retrograde.

The story behind them

In the account of the churning of the ocean, an asura named Svarbhanu drank the nectar of immortality by deception. Vishnu severed his head with the discus, but because the nectar had already passed his throat both halves survived.

The head became Rahu and the body became Ketu.

The symbolism is exact. Rahu has a head but no body, so his appetite is endless and never satisfied. Ketu has a body but no head, so he acts without calculation and is indifferent to gain.

What Ketu signifies

Ketu signifies detachment, liberation, spirituality, intuition, research, mystery, occult knowledge, astrology, medicine and subtle subjects.

It also relates to sudden events, impressions carried from previous lives, ancestors on the mother's side, and separation.

How Ketu works

Understanding Ketu's method matters more than memorising its significations.

In whatever house Ketu sits, it tends to reduce ordinary material satisfaction in the matters of that house.

But there is a second half to this. In that same area it grants unusual depth and expertise. It is as though Ketu says that in this field you will not receive external pleasure, you will receive inner knowledge.

Ketu in the fifth house, for instance, may bring worry concerning children, while at the same time granting deep spiritual intelligence and facility with mantra.

Its placements

There is disagreement among authorities about Ketu's exaltation and debilitation. One widely held view places its exaltation in Scorpio and debilitation in Taurus.

Ketu is generally taken to give results resembling Mars, and is considered comfortable in Sagittarius and Pisces.

It spends about eighteen months in a sign and completes its circuit in eighteen years.

Favourable Ketu

A strong and well placed Ketu gives remarkable intuition. Such people arrive at the heart of a subject without obvious effort.

They do well in research, medicine, astrology, spirituality and any field requiring technical depth.

Ketu reduces material attachment, which brings a certain contentment. Ketu in the twelfth house is regarded as a strong indication of moksha.

Difficult Ketu

An afflicted Ketu can bring confusion, aimlessness and anxiety without an identifiable cause. The person cannot say what they actually want.

Sudden changes, breaks in relationships and health complaints that resist diagnosis are also associated with it. Illnesses that are hard to identify are traditionally connected with Ketu.

In Kaal Sarp Yoga

When all seven planets fall between Rahu and Ketu, Kaal Sarp Yoga forms. Ketu's role is significant, since it is one end of the axis around which the whole chart is balanced.

Remedies

Ganesha is regarded as the presiding deity for Ketu, and his worship is the foremost remedy.

Donating a flag to a temple, feeding dogs, and donating sesame, blankets and brown items are the usual prescriptions.

The mantra Om Kem Ketave Namah may be recited. Cat's eye is Ketu's stone, but it is among the most sensitive of the gemstones and should not be worn without expert guidance.

One point matters more than any of these. There is little sense in trying to suppress Ketu's influence. Understanding it and giving it a direction is more useful. For someone who channels that energy into study, research or spiritual practice, Ketu turns out to be the greatest of gifts.
