The Navamsa Chart (D9) and Why Marriage Analysis Depends On It

Vedic astrology does not work from one chart. There is a tradition of sixteen divisional charts, the shodasha varga, and after the birth chart itself the most important of them is the Navamsa.

There is an old saying among astrologers that the birth chart is the tree and the Navamsa is its fruit. The birth chart shows what is promised. The Navamsa shows whether the promise ripens.

How the Navamsa is built

Each sign spans thirty degrees. That span is divided into nine equal parts, each of three degrees and twenty minutes. Each part is one navamsa.

Counting nine navamsas across twelve signs gives one hundred and eight in total. That number is not a coincidence. The twenty seven nakshatras each have four padas, which also gives one hundred and eight. A navamsa and a nakshatra pada are the same division of the sky.

Each planet is placed in the Navamsa chart according to which navamsa it falls in. This is why the Navamsa ascendant changes every thirteen to fifteen minutes, and why an accurate birth time is not negotiable for this chart.

What the Navamsa shows

The first and best known use is marriage. The Navamsa is sometimes called the chart of the spouse. The Navamsa ascendant, its seventh house and the planets there indicate the nature, background and quality of married life.

The second use is measuring the real strength of the planets. This is the most neglected and the most useful part.

The third is the later portion of life. The first half of life is held to follow the birth chart more closely, and the second half the Navamsa.

The truth about planetary strength

Suppose someone has Jupiter exalted in Cancer in the birth chart. At first glance that is excellent. But if the same Jupiter falls in Capricorn in the Navamsa, it is neechamsa, and much of that promise is reduced.

The reverse also occurs. A planet debilitated in the birth chart that becomes exalted in the Navamsa is treated as having its debilitation cancelled, and it often performs far better than expected.

This is precisely why reading only the birth chart gives an incomplete picture, and why two astrologers looking at the same D1 can reach different conclusions if only one of them checked the D9.

Vargottama

When a planet occupies the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa, it is called vargottama. This is a highly regarded condition.

A vargottama planet has a kind of internal consistency. It expresses what it signifies with unusual firmness. Where the lagna lord is vargottama, one commonly sees marked self possession and clarity of purpose.

How marriage is actually read

An experienced astrologer follows an order. First the seventh house, the seventh lord and Venus are examined in the birth chart. Then the same three points are checked in the Navamsa. Then the strength of the seventh lord in the D9 is assessed.

Alongside this, Mars is checked for Manglik Dosha, guna matching is done for compatibility, and the dasha periods of both people are compared to judge timing.

A necessary caution

Free applications will generate a Navamsa chart in seconds. The difficulty is that if the birth time is wrong by even fifteen minutes, the Navamsa is entirely different and every conclusion drawn from it is wrong.

So if you are relying on the Navamsa for a decision as significant as marriage, confirm the birth time first. Where the time is uncertain, rectification is the more sensible course.
