Vastu Shastra is the traditional Indian discipline of designing built space in harmony with direction and the five elements. It is not superstition about furniture. At its core it is a set of observations about light, air, heat and movement, expressed in the vocabulary of its time.
The north east, called Ishan, receives the gentlest morning light and is treated as the most auspicious corner. It suits a prayer room, a water source or open space. Keeping it light and uncluttered is the single most repeated instruction in the texts.
The south east, Agneya, is the direction of fire and suits the kitchen. Cooking facing east is preferred.
The south west, Nairitya, is the heaviest corner and suits the main bedroom and storage. It should be the most solid part of the house.
The north west, Vayavya, is the direction of air and suits guest rooms and the movement of people who come and go.
Common defects include a heavy or elevated north east, a toilet in the Ishan corner, a kitchen in the north east, and a main entrance placed in an unfavourable segment.
Most of these can be addressed without touching the structure. Mirrors, colour, lighting, rock salt, metal and yantras are used to rebalance a space. Demolition is a last resort, and any consultant who reaches for it first is worth questioning.
For families living abroad, the principles apply unchanged. Direction is determined by magnetic north, which exists everywhere.
