Online Puja and Consultation from Abroad: Is It Valid?

The number of Indian families living outside the country continues to grow, and one question comes up repeatedly. Does a puja performed at a distance carry the same effect, and can a chart reading over video be relied upon?

Both scripture and practice answer clearly.

The sankalpa is the foundation

Every Vedic rite begins with a sankalpa, in which the sponsor states their name, gotra, place, the date and the purpose of the ritual.

In scriptural terms it is the sankalpa that connects the sponsor to the rite. Physical presence assists, but it is not the essential element.

This is not a new arrangement. For centuries people have had shraddha and tarpan performed for their ancestors at Kashi, Gaya and Prayag without being present. The sponsor sends only a name and a gotra.

Remote puja today is the same practice in a modern form.

What can be done remotely

The Satyanarayan Katha, Rudrabhishek, Navagraha Shanti, Mahamrityunjaya recitation, planetary propitiation, tarpan for ancestors and various mantra observances can all be conducted at a distance.

The sponsor can join over video and speak their own name and gotra at the moment of the sankalpa.

What requires presence

Some samskaras require the person themselves, because they are the subject of the rite rather than its sponsor. Marriage, Mundan, the sacred thread ceremony and Griha Pravesh belong here.

In such cases there are two workable options. Either arrange a qualified pandit locally, or have a senior member of the family carry out the rite under guidance over video. The second is useful in places where no pandit is available.

The question of timezone

This is where most errors occur, and it is the point most often overlooked.

A Hindu tithi begins at sunrise and is determined by local sunrise. It follows that the tithi running in India at a given moment is not the tithi running elsewhere at that same moment.

Ekadashi, Amavasya, Purnima and every vrat date must be determined by local calculation. An Indian panchang does not transfer directly.

The same applies to the moonrise for Karva Chauth, the offering times for Chhath, the Ghatasthapana muhurat for Navratri and the parana time for Ekadashi. All are local.

A common wish is to keep a fast on the same day as family back home. That is understandable, but in scriptural terms a vrat follows the tithi at the place where the observer actually is.

Charts for children born abroad

This is the second technical matter that matters greatly.

A chart is always cast for the latitude, longitude and the timezone in force at the birth place on that date.

A child born in London, New York or Sydney must have their chart cast from those coordinates. A chart built on Indian Standard Time will produce an entirely wrong ascendant.

A further subtlety concerns daylight saving. Many countries advance their clocks for part of the year. Where a birth falls in that period, the adjustment must be made.

Many free applications do not handle this, which throws out both the ascendant and the Navamsa and renders the whole reading useless.

Arranging a consultation

Three details must be accurate: date of birth, time of birth and place of birth.

The time is best taken from a birth certificate or hospital record. A time recalled from memory is usually an estimate.

Where the time is uncertain, rectification can be carried out using known life events.

Because of the difference in timezones, the appointment is simply set at a time convenient to both sides.

A closing thought

Distance does not stand in the way of devotion. The texts state repeatedly that intent is primary and method is its vehicle.

Families keeping their traditions alive thousands of miles from home are engaged in something demanding in itself. What is needed is only that the method and the calculation be correct, so that their sincerity receives its full result.
